Australian pricing for the Land Rover Defender has been announced. And, of course, it’s expensive. Not entirely ridiculous but still quite...heroic.

Kinja'd!!!

2019 Land Rover Defender 110 pricing*

D200 (a)$69,990

D240 (a)$75,900

D240 S (a)$83,800

D240 SE (a)$91,300

D240 First Edition (a)$102,500

P400 S (a)$95,700

P400 SE (a)$103,100

P400 HSE (a)$112,900

P400 X (a)$137,100

*Excludes on-road costs (Thankyou Go Auto)

The base D200 is well equipped and all but that’s a lot of coin for a car that is going to depreciate like a toilet. Made worse by  the fact that it is supported by a local distributor that has the after sales skills of a six year old boy child being toilet trained...

If the depreciation is bad and you wanted one, it sounds like a good opportunity to buy one used in a few years..

Hi. I apologise for any awkwardness, as I’m a new member and this is my first post, so I don’t know how this is usually done. I’ve been lurking for a couple of months or so and I’m not one for social media, but I haven’t found such a collection of like-minded car geeks anywhere else. My tastes and takes tend to the more off-beat, so I suspect I will fit in reasonably well here. The current drama around Oppo’s very existence has made me decide I should give it a go and and the title of th is post is how I’ve felt about this thing since it was unveiled. I own an old/real/proper Defender (yeah, I make questionable purchasing decisions) and while Land Rover have clearly given up on any pretense of building properly utilitarian vehicles, I can’t believe that they were working on this for years and this was the best they could come up with. The pricing is well into Prado, then LandCruiser territory. I expect they’ll still sell a far few, but they won’t be a common sight in the bush.

H ow do those prices compare to say a Toyota 4Runner over  there?

Too many people will try that trick to have the few that do sell be actually available. The other issue is the near total lack of after sales commitment and support from Land Rover itself (apart from its roadside assistance scheme) and the confinement of dealers to only capital cities plus a couple of regional centres in this country.

No 4Runner. Body on frame wagons (based on dual cab utes like Hilux and Ranger) run from mid 40 to mid 60 thousand. Toyota Prado and Jeep Grand Cherokee starts at low 60 thousand while the Land Cruiser 75 series wagon starts at 70 thousand. 200 Series starts at high 70 thousand.

Jeep Oz has the same problem with the Wrangler (50 grand) , Wrangler U nlimited (60 grand) and the Gladiator (65 grand ).

Multiply the numbers by 0.65 to get US dollars

Not going to disagree. It is worth remembering though that the old Defender wasn’t competitively priced against its market compatriots back in the day either. And they still sold a few.

However, back then there was more dealer and service support especially in regional areas. Unlike now...

I too used to have a Defender 200 TDi and before that a couple of Series. I even organised a TD5 dual cab as a work vehicle once. I have been a fan. I think the car will be fine but the lack of compelling argument (both practically and financially) is the issue. Perhaps when the 130 range is released in 2022 they'll have their practical hats on then...
